In about 1993 I was very bored with landscapes and wanted to move on. I contacted this lady named V.
under Harry Fredman for over ten years. Harry was truly gifted portrait artist around 1935-1980.
I called VJ and told her I wanted lessons on painting oil portraits. She kinda laughed and said "you have
to learn how to draw graphite portraits first". I told her " I can't even draw stick figures". She said "that is
why you need drawing lessons, you first have to learn graphite portraits before I will even try to teach you
oils". These are the steps of progression as she explained them to me. I am living proof that Harry
Fredman's method works wonders.
Step 1. Learn how to draw the elements first.(eyes, ears, nose, mouth)
About 10 3hr lessons drawing different types of elements
Step 2. Draw a real portrait from very high quality photos from a
professional photographer.(black and white only)
Step 3. After 5 very well done graphite portraits start oil painting the
elements. Use only brown umber and white.
Step 4. After this, paint a real portrait from high quality black and white
photos. Use only burnt umber and white. (for example click here)
Step 5. Next step is to paint the elements in full color.
Step 6. Finally after 30 4hr lessons I was ready to paint a full color
fine oil portrait. Look on my gallery page (brett).
Note: all the oil painting was done in VJ's studio. I was not allowed
to take the oil's home.

(but, I still have more to learn)
I have just started taking drawing lessons
again after a 15 year break. Why more lessons??
Just a burning passion to learn more. And when I learn more stuff from J.D. Hillberry I will pass
